Toyota fortuner Review


hi there, before the test drive, let’s take a look on exterior design of the all-new toyota fortuner first. as you have seen from the toyota fortuner world premier, it has new signature color called “phantom brown”, which is like metallic dark brown. it looks gorgeous when it’s under the sunlight new front grille! it’s completely different from hilux revo, which they share the same platform. the front grille is longer because it has new engine and the intercooler has moved to the front. for top spec model, it uses bi beam projector headlight together with day time running lights. let’s take a look how beautiful they are. but for the lowest model (2.4g m/t) won’t have day time running lights like this
bi-beam projector headlight (built-in high-beam and low beam) has blue beam, nice! it looks like luxurious european car at night let’s take a look 2.4g m/t model, its beam color is orange. it has position lamps instead of drl. you may open it during the daytime for your safety. let’s go through side view. fortuner has a very nice appearance even though it shares the same platform with hilux revo, and sport 18’ alloy wheels together with 265/60r18 tires, which is comfortable and suitable for road condition in thailand. at the back, it looks like toyota harrier,
especially the tail lights. the light guiding, you won’t see it clearly during the day time, but at night, it looks really beautiful. it comes along with led brake lights which look luxurious as european cars. the auto-lift tail gate can be opened by the remote control. big shocks make the gate looks more firm, just like bmw x5/x6 it also has the jam-protection system. i have tried this system from both ford everest and toyota fortuner. fortuner has lighter force than everest. the gate will stop when it hit something and push it back a little.
then you can press the button either on the remote control or the gate to make gate fully-open. fortuner has 3-rows seat (leather and synthetic leather) with chamois cream color (top spec model). the lower model with have brown color seats and the lowest model will have fabric seats. with this format will give you a durability of the platform. how to fold the third-row seats when you need more space? just hang it! toyota chose hanging style because this kind of platform and chassis are stronger than other pickup-based suvs just simply pull, fold, and hang.
it’s much easier than before. another side is the same, just simply pull, fold, and hang. the floor has slope for your feet, so you won’t sit with your knees up, which make the third row seats of fortuner are comfortable. someone said, when the seats are hanged looks untidy. but when you take it down and sit on it, it’s real comfortable and i’ll show you later. this is the overall design of the dashboard. the needlework looks luxurious. these two small pillars have chamois cream color with dark brown console.
take a closer look on needlework, it looks like handmade like exotic european car, such as spyker. it’s actually sewed by machine but have clinched to make it look real. but for toyota yaris or vios will have the stamp mark pattern which made from plastic. the console wrapped by leather, looks very nice. interior handles, some brands won’t have at driver position which customer always ask why you don’t have it? also some brands won’t have at a-pillar because they think that the drive can pull the steering wheel instead. but toyota give you all. the top model has six-speed transmission with eco and power modes which i’ll explain to you later.
sequential shift (+/- shifter) here and also the paddle shift behind the steering wheel. the top model also has cruise-control and has chamois cream color seats. let’s try the second row seats. hear the second row, i’ll compare which brand is more comfortable. toyota fortuner doesn’t have the handle at b-pillar but has at the top. i really like the seats color, it’s very luxurious. people have talked about it in the social media that fortuner has the luxurious style. well, it’s luxurious if you have sit in this model. here is utility bag hook.
here are power outlets, fortuner have provide standard socket 220v at the bottom for you, great! fortuner also has the 2nd row and 3rd row automatic air condition. so, you will get both front and back automatic air condition, great job! and the vent is at the front of back passengers. the glass holder is at the correct position. if it’s at the top, it won’t comfortable while you rest your arm and have glass/bottle blocked your hand. but this, armrest is fit to your hand and just push the glass holder which is much better than the top. let’s try the third-row seats so we will know if it can be sit for real or not
pull the seat and step in! i’ve told you earlier toyota chose hanging style because the seat frame is stronger in term of the side fastener and force absorber of platform. in case of accident from the back, the hard seat will help to prevent you from back injury. you have to choose, just looks a bit untidy and you will get more safety! here is third row air condition. headrest fit with my head (my height 180cm).
what i told you it has slope for your legs. other brands my knees will be up about 5-10cm. but for fortuner the slope will lift our body and won’t feel stiff. you can’t sit for 100km with this posture, but kids are okay. i can sit here for 100-200 km if needed. well, with higher seat and lower legs, these are the advantages of the third-row seat for fortuner which you try it yourself. i’ve showed you around already. let’s have a test drive!
on this trip, we test-drive as a caravan and use moderate speed and not over the speed limit. we used the on-road route from surat thani airport to our destination, phuket. we have all range of models for toyota fortuner in this caravan; six-speed automatic transmission and six-speed manual transmission. also the engines; both 2.8-liter and 2.4-liter diesel engines and 2.7-liter petrol engine. i have showed you the exterior top spec model earlier which is 2.8v, six-speed ​​automatic transmission model with “sigma (î£) 4” four-wheel drive, costs almost 1.6 million baht. but i have tested the 2.4v, 6-speed auto transmission with two-wheel drive.
it is likely to be the best-selling model because it has reasonable price at 1.369 million baht comparing to what you will get in this model. to say so, the exterior is just like the top model but the price is cheaper than the top model 230,000 baht, but it has enough amenities and standard options that satisfy the driver and passengers’ needs. the engine is sufficient for using in both urban and rural, low fuel-consumption, six-speed transmission. it just doesn’t have four-wheel drive and has less power. how enough? mainly, you will get bi-beam projector headlight with led bulbs
and led drl (which can be seen from long distance during the daytime), front grille and all body parts are the same as top model, door handles and side mirrors are same color as the car, shark fin antenna, guideing led taillights, alloy wheels, and the auto-lift tail gate that can be opened by the remote control, cool! the interior of fortuner 2.4v diesel has brown color seats but for the top model has chamois cream color, that’s all! i’ve driven on both passenger and driver.
as the passenger i’ve tried to catch all feelings of the car and the comfort while traveling in the cabin. i’ve found that the new fortuner is more comfortable than the previous model, lees noise from outside, more stable and comfortable suspension. as there is no standardized bias of all toyota models. there is no sway as it’s the standard of toyota which their basic engineering is further developed. as you can see on the road, many old cars are toyota which you can use it for decade. the main facilities for passengers, auto air-condition which module has better appearance than previous model just like european car. the advantage is the sensor that will maintain a constant temperature in the cabin,
so the kids will not get sick. to be honest, what don’t like in this car is that you will get power seat just for the driver only, not front passenger seat. not just this model, even the top model will get only one power seat. well, the car worth more than one million baht should have two power seats as the standard. in the other hand, it is acceptable for me that it has a cool box to chill your drinks and also the glass holders in front of air
vent which they have since vigo and old fortuner. moved to position behind the steering wheel. i’ve tested toyota revo 2.4-liter before, fortuner have the same feeling. personally, i like it! i can feel the power and the engine since i start to hit the pedal, really fun to drive, no delay. most important, no need to pay 1000 bill when fill up the gas. i can feel the behavior of the car better when i drive by myself. i must admit that the driving of toyota fortuner is really smooth.
i mean for the tuning the engine and transmission of the car, it’s the character of the car. in these days, the technology of the car are not much different between the brands. but it depends the engineers who want which character to be in this car and this be done by the software. toyota fortuner has chosen smooth character. the acceleration come right away when i hit the pedal. the engine will climb with linear line, polite but powerful! the six-speed transmission run smoothly,
but there is a perception that gear is shifted and relate with engine rpm and vehicle speed. it’s the character for most people! the 2gd-ftv engine has massive torque of 400 nm at low rpm around 1,600-2,000 rpm. with maximum 150 horsepower at 3,400 rpm, you will get the great acceleration and of course, it’s fun to drive! you may have read the specification from brochure and said that why it has low horsepower? honestly, the car that is fun to drive depends on the torque, not horsepower. bottom line, this 2.4-liter engine can give you top speed up to 180 km/hour
and fuel consumption is13-15 km/liter, which depends on driver behavior. the car perform well on direct and curve road. feel like driving sedan car. the new block diesel engine both 2.4-liter and 2.8-liter give you a low fuel-consumption, no more shaking because of larger chassis which can help to absorb that symptom. and long steering knuckle can absorbs shaking and set all four wheels to be upright with road at all times. tires are fully touch with the road and grip. shock absorbers and springs are set to be soft but stable, no rush to change.
this is also the advantages of toyota. the computer is highly developed. there is software for controlling the torque to reduce front lowering symptom. it maintains the chassis to be the right position which educe car sickness of passengers. if you are in a hurry, just press “power mode” button, and you will get sport driving mode. the brake is still the endless question of fortuner, front disc and rear drum. drivers have asked toyota executives as well, why don’t you put 4-wheel disc brakes to fortuner?
because all the competitors in suv and ppv segment already have it. toyota explained that the front disc rear drum more appropriate to road conditions and the weather in thailand. front disc will work well in the dry, dusty road and displace water during rain. the rear drum brake for assisting the brake when the vehicle is fully-loaded and when have go through drainage flood or mud rain. it likely to see these mix driving conditions in thailand. depend on your point of view, this argument will not end.
in terms of the top model, 2.8-liter engine. i’ve tried it in the off-road simulation track, to test the use of technology that came with the car and sigma-4 four-wheel drive. but i would like to discuss about it in the future, thank you.
